Ian Truelove

Ian Truelove (b. 1970, Sheffield) is an artist and educator who lives and works in Leeds, UK. His work explores the intersection of technology and art, drawing inspiration from science and philosophy. His most recent works explore what it means to be a human artist in an age that is increasingly dominated by the terrifying wonder of artificial intelligence.

What happens when we give the machine our brushes and instruct it to finish our artwork? Here, a human-crafted painting is progressively iterated into artificial art through the use of Adobe Photoshop’s AI-powered generative fill tool. Adobe’s engine extends the artist's painting with its best-guess brushstrokes, delivering two different but equally plausible simulations. Every eight minutes, both parts of the original human artwork align and we see how the artist used his hand to channel five decades of fleshy existence. In between, all we see are two believable but cold-hearted machine-made approximations of art.
